Wildwood Nature Program

Grades 4-8, Thursdays in the Fall (15 spots maximum). $45 per week
Outdoor education stimulates a child’s imagination and sparks their sense of wonder. When children are given the opportunity to explore and learn about the natural environment with all their senses, they naturally become more curious and develop critical thinking skills. Children learn to understand and respect nature, feeling confident and whole in the outdoors.
This is an educational experience in a natural setting. We will have access to a bathroom with plumbing, and use of shelter/heat on rainy, windy, and frosty days. However our primary classroom is outside and children should be dressed for the heat, rain, cold, or wind as even in inclement weather, we will be outside for most of class to play, explore and experience the natural world.
Families will occasionally come together during "family work days" when we can work on major garden projects that can't be accomplished within the constraints of our weekly class. Families will gather for monthly events so the students can show off their hard work. For example, a harvest festival, S'mores nights, family picnics, seasonal ceremonies, compost workshops, art exhibitions, yoga & meditation workshops, talent shows, etc.

- Last year we created own garden from scratch! Aided by a landscape designer who specializes in regenerative and sustainable landscapes, we planted a native pollinator patch, three fruit tree guilds, an additional flower patch and three raised bed were we grew our own food. This year, we will be making our own raspberry and blackberry patch!
- Students learn to compost, maintain several types of compost bins, and learn about soil health.
- Students will learn to identify plants and their plant families, learn to grow herbs, edible plants and flowers, collect seeds, make herbal medicines and teas. Students will learn about local wildlife and learn how to journal their observations and findings in their own handmade nature journal.
- Students will build with wood, turn plants into cordage, paper, and baskets, make art with nature, do printmaking, make natural paint brushes and inks, weave with twigs and plants, and sculpt with clay.
- Students will be immersed in science, math, social studies, art, language arts and physical education in this class. Students will learn from living books and in turn be able to tell rich stories, listen to nature poetry and learn to write nature poems. They will be exposed to the periodic table of elements, especially carbon, nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and oxygen, learn about carbon/nitrogen ratio for composting, etc. Students will be split into two groups based on grade/age. Older students can research the weekly topic ahead of time, share interesting facts with the class and add them to our “knowledge board”.
- Projects may include, painting, basketry, paper crafts, fiber crafts (felting, knitting, sewing, weaving, macrame, dyeing), candle-making, woodwork, cooking, crafting herbal salves and self-care products.

Beginning Readers Class (1st/2nd Grade)
Not currently scheduled for the Fall. If I get more requests to teach this class, I will add it to the schedule. $20 per week
In this class, young children come to interact with literacy in entertaining yet educational ways. A major focus will be phonics to build a strong foundation for decoding larger, multi-syllable words in the future. We will introduce new sight words to be able to read and construct larger, richer sentences. We will focus on story-telling skills and weaving compelling stories, as well as doing some copy work and writing. Through games and hands-on activities, students will study grammar and punctuation. They will learn the difference between nouns and verbs and learn when to use a period. Enrolling students should already know the alphabet and letter sounds and be able to sound out CVC words (dog, cat, man, map, etc.) We will review those concepts in the first few weeks (as well as always reviewing those concepts at the beginning of class) so it's okay if your student is rusty. We just won't be dedicating a full year towards alphabet sounds.
